Fans reveal why Taylor Swift was booed at the Super Bowl

She boasts a fan base in the tens of millions, has been one of the world’s most recognizable women for the past two years, and has managed to avoid any major scandals or controversies. Yet, even Taylor Swift isn’t immune to an unexpected wave of boos.

During last night’s Super Bowl LIX between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, Swift appeared to be minding her own business when the crowd suddenly turned against her. While at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans to cheer on her boyfriend, Chiefs star Travis Kelce, she seemed to mouth “What is going on?” to her friend and fellow artist Ice Spice.

The booing erupted when the stadium cameras zoomed in on Swift, displaying her on the big screen in front of the 75,000-strong audience.

Naturally, Swift seemed just as surprised as everyone else, leaving many to wonder: what sparked the reaction in the first place?

As expected in today’s social media age, the incident quickly became a hot topic online. Within moments of the clip surfacing, fans on X were dissecting what had happened.

“Eagles fans are booing her. She’s originally from the Philly area but obviously rooting for Travis and the Chiefs,” one user explained.

Another added: “The boos are from Eagles fans—aka the opposing team’s supporters. This is normal.”

A third simply said: “It’s the Eagles fans.”

Of course, not everyone found the situation so clear-cut. Many people took to X, confused by the reaction.

“Why did she get booed?” one person asked. “I thought she was America’s sweetheart?”

“Booing Taylor Swift as if she’s playing on the field against ‘your’ team, even though she’s just sitting there looking pretty, is loser behavior,” said another.

Another fan questioned the reaction: “What I don’t understand is why people booed at Taylor Swift? Like she was doing literally nothing and she’s just there to show support to Travis Kelce and see the game, it’s not like they’re going to make a Gabriella-Troy scene in High School Musical 3,” a third wrote.

Meanwhile, someone who received an entirely different reception was Donald Trump. The former president, who made history as the first sitting U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl, was met with cheers when the cameras turned to him. “I thought it would be a good thing for the country to have the president at the game,” Trump had said in an earlier interview.

As for the game itself, the Eagles dominated the Chiefs with a decisive 40-22 victory, preventing them from securing back-to-back championships.
