28-Year-Old American Airlines Pilot Dies in Plane Crash Near Washington – His Father Speaks Out

A grieving father mourns the loss of his 28-year-old son, Sam Lilley, a young pilot who tragically died in a plane crash. Sam, engaged to be married, shared his father Timothy Lilley’s deep passion for aviation.

Sam was one of two pilots aboard an American Airlines flight that collided with a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport on January 29. Timothy, a former military helicopter pilot, initially dismissed the idea that his son was involved but grew increasingly anxious when Sam failed to check in. His worst fears were confirmed.

“This is undoubtedly the worst day of my life,” Timothy expressed, later writing, “Sam was the First Officer on the flight that crashed in DC last night. It is so devastating to lose someone that is loved so much.”

Sam had been a pilot with PSA Airlines for two years, having discovered his passion for flying after earning a marketing degree from Georgia Southern University. He worked tirelessly to achieve his dream. Beyond his career, he was planning a future with his fiancée, looking forward to their upcoming wedding.

As Timothy mourns, he takes comfort in Sam’s accomplishments but struggles with the pain of losing him. “I was so proud when Sam became a pilot. Now it hurts so bad I can’t even cry myself to sleep. I know I’ll see him again, but my heart is breaking,” he shared.

Sam’s friend and fellow pilot, Skeeter Little, remembers him as a kind and joyful person who always brought laughter. “The man had a smile every day. He had the best jokes,” Skeeter recalled. Sam’s enthusiasm and humor left a lasting impact on those around him.

The PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 was approaching Runway 33 at Reagan Washington International Airport when it collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter, sending both aircraft into the Potomac River. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities working to determine the cause of the accident and prevent future tragedies.

With decades of experience as a military pilot, Timothy believes the PSA jet followed proper procedures, while the military helicopter made a fatal error. “From what I can see, those guys turned right into the jet. The Army pilot made a grave error. It hurts me because those are my brothers, and now my son is dead,” he said.

President Donald Trump acknowledged the tragedy, confirming that the rescue mission had transitioned to a recovery effort with no survivors. He pledged to support affected families and ensure such a disaster never happens again.

As of now, at least 40 bodies have been recovered, and the plane’s black boxes have been found, offering crucial data for the investigation. The aviation community continues to mourn the loss of Sam Lilley, a pilot who had worked so hard to fulfill his dream.
