“Of course. Family comes first.”

My husband, Ryan, said it before I had a chance to answer.

His sister Dana sat across from me at our kitchen table, calmly cutting a chicken breast into pieces for her younger daughter.

She had just announced that she and her two children would be staying with us for another month.

Not asked.

Announced.

They had already been living in my house for forty days without paying rent.

I set my fork down.

“Ryan, can we talk about that first?”

He looked irritated.

“What is there to talk about? She needs a little more time.”

Dana gave me a tired smile.

“I’m not trying to be a burden, Claire.”

Before I could answer, my five-year-old son Noah looked up from his macaroni.

“Mommy?”

“Yeah, buddy?”

“Why does Aunt Dana hide your letters in the blue suitcase?”

Nobody moved.

Ryan’s hand stopped beside his glass.

Dana’s fork touched her plate with a small click.

I looked at Noah.

“What letters?”

He pointed toward the hallway.

“Your letters. The ones with your name.”

Dana pushed her chair back.

“He’s five, Claire.”

I stood.

“Where is the suitcase?”

Ryan stood too.

“Claire, stop.”

That was the part I remember most clearly.

Not Dana leaving the kitchen.

Not Noah staring at us.

Ryan telling me to stop.

I followed Dana down the hallway.

The Blue Suitcase

Dana reached the guest room first and tried to shut the door.

I caught it with my hand.

“Move.”

“You’re frightening the kids.”

“Then give me my mail.”

Ryan came up behind me.

“Claire, you’re making this into something it isn’t.”

I turned around.

“Then tell me what it is.”

He didn’t answer.

Dana moved toward the closet.

That was enough.

I stepped inside.

The blue suitcase was on the floor behind a laundry basket.

It was mine.

My grandmother had bought it years ago for a trip to Charleston. After she died and left me the house, I kept the suitcase because I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away.

Now Dana grabbed the handle.

So did I.

“Let go.”

“Claire—”

The zipper gave way.

The suitcase dropped sideways.

Envelopes spilled across the carpet.

Not three.

Not five.

Dozens.

Some were unopened.

Some had already been torn open.

I saw my name everywhere.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

My bank.

The county.

An insurance company.

A credit bureau.

Ryan stopped talking.

I crouched and picked up the nearest envelope.

It had been mailed almost three weeks earlier.

PROPERTY RECORDS NOTICE.

My hands became very steady.

I opened it.

The letter said a document had recently been recorded affecting ownership of my property.

The address underneath was ours.

The house my grandmother had left me.

I read the next line twice.

According to the filing, ownership had been transferred through a quitclaim deed to something called Whitmore Family Holdings LLC.

“What is Whitmore Family Holdings?”

Dana folded her arms.

“I have no idea.”

I looked at Ryan.

“Do you?”

“No.”

I picked up another envelope.

This one was from a lender.

There was a loan number near the top and a balance printed in bold.

$240,000.

Secured by the house.

The letter said final borrower verification had to be completed by ten the following morning.

I held it up.

“What is this?”

Ryan rubbed the back of his neck.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“Maybe it’s junk mail.”

I looked down at the pile.

Nobody gets thirty pieces of junk mail addressed to them hidden in a suitcase.

Noah had followed us into the hallway.

He stood there holding his plastic dinosaur.

I stopped asking questions.

That decision probably saved my house.

I Stopped Arguing and Started Taking Pictures

I photographed every envelope before touching anything else.

Front.

Back.

Postmark.

Anything that had been opened.

Ryan watched me.

“What are you doing?”

“Documenting my mail.”

“For what?”

I looked at him.

“I don’t know yet.”

Dana stepped toward the suitcase.

“Some of that might be mine.”

I pulled it away from her.

“Then point to the envelope with your name on it.”

She didn’t.

I took Noah upstairs and packed an overnight bag.

Ryan followed.

“You’re seriously leaving?”

I folded Noah’s pajamas.

“For tonight.”

“Because Dana moved some mail?”

I stopped.

“Moved?”

Ryan looked away.
