Happy Soul Moral Stories

I Was Signing Emergency C-Section Papers Alone, Praying Our Unborn Triplet Girls Would Survive, While My Husband Had Silenced His Phone to Celebrate With His First Love and Cut a Cake Beside Her. The Hospital Tried to Reach Him 26 Times. Four Days Later, He Finally Walked Back In Expecting to Find His Wife and Three Babies Waiting—but My Room Was Empty, the Nurse Wouldn’t Tell Him Where We Were, and He Had No Idea What I Had Done Before I Left

Part 1 of 3

He Said He’d Be Right Back

“We need to deliver all three babies now.”

Dr. Patel said it without raising his voice.

That somehow made it worse.

I was thirty-two weeks pregnant with triplet girls, lying in a hospital bed with two monitors strapped across my stomach and another nurse trying to find a better reading on the third baby.

One heartbeat kept dropping.

Then another.

My husband, Mark, had been standing beside the window five minutes earlier.

He looked at his phone.

“I need to make a call.”

I grabbed his wrist.

“Now?”

“Two minutes, Em. I’ll be right outside.”

He kissed my forehead and walked out.

That was the last time I saw him before our daughters were born.

A nurse named Rachel pushed a clipboard toward me.

“Emily, I need your signature here.”

My hand was shaking badly enough that she steadied the bottom of the clipboard.

“Can we wait for my husband?”

Rachel looked toward the door.

Dr. Patel didn’t.

“I don’t recommend waiting.”

He pointed at the monitor.

“Baby B is showing repeated distress. Baby C is starting to concern me too.”

We had already named them.

Grace.

Lily.

Hope.

I stared at three names written in blue ink on the corner of my birth-plan folder.

The plan had become useless in less than twenty minutes.

“Call Mark again.”

Rachel did.

No answer.

Another nurse tried.

Then I called him myself.

Once.

Twice.

Four times.

Straight to voicemail.

“Mark, they’re taking me into surgery.”

I tried to keep my voice steady.

“Please come back.”

I hung up and looked at the door.

It stayed closed.

Dr. Patel moved closer.

“Emily, I need your decision.”

I signed.

The signature barely looked like my name.

Twenty-Six Calls

The operating room was colder than I expected.

People kept introducing themselves, but I couldn’t hold onto their names.

Someone adjusted an IV. Someone else covered my hair. Rachel remained near my shoulder.

I kept asking the same question.

“Did he answer?”

And she kept giving me the same answer.

“Not yet.”

Before they started, she let me try Mark one more time.

Voicemail.

“Mark, please.”

That was all I managed.

Then they took my phone.

Grace came first.

I heard a small cry.

“Baby A is out.”

I started crying immediately.

“Is she okay?”

“She’s doing well.”

Then Lily.

There was more movement around the warmer that time.

Less talking.

I couldn’t see much from where I was lying.

“What’s happening?”

Rachel squeezed my shoulder.

“They’re helping her. Stay with me.”

Hope came last.

I waited for a cry.

Nothing.

“Why isn’t she crying?”

Nobody answered immediately.

I turned my head as far as I could.

All I could see were blue gowns gathered around something impossibly small.

“Hope?”

Dr. Patel’s voice came from behind the drape.

“The neonatal team has her.”

“Is she alive?”

Rachel leaned close enough that I could see her eyes above her mask.

“Yes.”

That word carried me through the next few minutes.

Then something changed.

More people entered.

Dr. Patel asked for medication.

Someone said my blood pressure was dropping.

I remember Rachel telling me to keep my eyes open.

I remember asking whether Mark had come back.

Then I remember nothing.

When I woke, my mother-in-law was sitting beside my bed.

Diane had both hands wrapped around a paper coffee cup she wasn’t drinking from.

My throat hurt.

“Where’s Mark?”

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“I don’t know.”

I turned toward the bassinet area before remembering my babies wouldn’t be there.

“The girls?”

Diane stood immediately.

“Grace and Lily are stable. Hope needs more support.”

“Did Mark see them?”

She looked down at the coffee.

That was my answer.

Later, Rachel returned my phone.

There were no messages from Mark.

No missed calls.

Nothing.

I opened our call history.

The hospital had called him.

The nurses had called him.

I had called him.

By the time I stopped counting, there were twenty-six attempts.

The Photograph

The next two days blurred together.

I saw Grace and Lily when I was strong enough to be taken to the NICU.

Hope was smaller.

There were more tubes around her.

I put one finger through the opening in her incubator.

Her hand closed around the tip of it.

That evening, Mark finally sent a message.

Sorry. Phone died. Everything got crazy. Are you okay?

I read it twice.

Then I locked my phone.

He still didn’t come.

The following morning, a message arrived from a number I didn’t recognize.

There was no introduction.

Just a photograph.

Mark was standing inside a private club I recognized from one of his work dinners.

Beside him was Madison Vale.

I knew Madison.

Not personally.

But I knew the name.

Mark’s first serious girlfriend.

The woman he’d reconnected with months earlier and repeatedly described as “an old friend.”

In the photograph, they were standing close together behind a small white cake.

Their hands were resting on the same silver cake knife.
